About this deal

Throughout the month of ‘Spooktober’ I’m reviewing creepy reads, so make sure the check out the rest of my posts.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The fact that the are real and that they have the rhyme that goes through the chapters of the book is even more creepy. There she met some great people and had a lot of fun messing about during lessons that were clearly meant to be extremely solemn affairs. One of the most memorable scenes is when Rebecca finally shows Sophie the full series of events that lead to her death. And I also liked Sophie, who starts out with feet of clay but ends up as a fully paid-up member of the evil-fighting squad. The story is narrated by Sophie, who goes to stay with her step-cousins on the Isle of Skye for the summer. On the YA stuff, I do feel it’s very important that reading and enjoying fiction stays healthy and strong among young people. Piper, Cameron and Lilias, something is off and this is not helped by the presence of another cousin, Rebecca but, Rebecca us dead. Fast paced, Frozen Charlotte will keep you turning the pages once you get into the story, because once you start, you'll need to know what's actually going on. It really couldn’t have been easy for her, especially because of the way she felt partly responsible for what happened.

There always seems to be something dark simmering beneath every word spoken – something which could boil over at any second.

However things take a turn for the worse when Sophie starts hearing voices, the appearance of creepy frozen charlotte dolls and the fact that Lillie claims that Sophie wasn't the only person to arrive at the house (that Sophie dead cousin has followed her to the house). Overall, this was a pacey, fun read – spooky and atmospheric – with a lot of genuinely scary scenes! I originally picked it up because the whole doll aspect reminded me of PLL, and it does have some creepy PLL vibes, although thankfully the dolls are where the similarities end! I was also lucky enough to get my copy signed by Bell at YALC earlier on in the year, so I was even more excited to pick it up.

The teens in this one are very mature so I feel this would satisfy even those who don't normally like YA fiction.

There also used to be a fourth cousin, Rebecca, but she died in an accident and they don't talk about her. The suspense throughout was excellent – the tension building up, almost suffocating both me and the characters, was brilliant, and by the end I felt really close to Sophie, Cameron, Lilias and Piper. For some years these ranged from dolphin trainer to animal shelter vet but then, at fifteen, she had an epiphany involving John and Robert Kennedy and decided to become a lawyer instead.

Rebecca, finally too injured to move, was left with her frozen Charlotte doll to freeze to death just like Charlotte in the story.Jay was a beloved friend who could have become a beloved boyfriend and the missed chance is what propels Sophie to put herself in danger, despite her better judgement. However, haunted by the tragic death of her best friend and the spooky circumstances that led up to his demise, she arrives bringing more baggage than just her psychical ones. I was hooked from the first chapter; within only a few pages I felt chills, and began to realise that this book would be a lot creepier than I had first anticipated. You make an educated guess after one chapter as to what you think is going to happen, but in the next the character does a full 180 and you change your mind. Suitable for anyone young person who likes horror but is still maybe a little to young for more adult horror, then this is a great introduction.
